It is called Jott, and although I have not used it yet, I plan to give it a spin. It requires you to subscribe to their service, though. I think that in addition to saving your audio, it can also convert your recorded voice into text, via a post to their web service (transcription happens at Jott's servers). Also, there is a way to get to the iPod's basic controls without unlocking the iPhone and avoiding all the steps you list. You can tell the iPhone to show you the basic Play, Fast-Forward, Rewind, Stop, Pause and Volume in a little panel whenever you double-tap the Home button. To set it up, go to Settings > General > Home Button. The default is NOT set to iPod, but I found this to be my favorite use for the double-tap. Hope this helps your friend.
